Step 1: PREP PRIOR TO SANDING

Ensure any nails are countersunk beneath the timber surface by using a nail punch and hammer and fill nail holes and voids using a suitable quality timber filler.

If required, remove existing/old coating by sanding with a drum sander and edging sander using 40 grit sand paper.

It is important to make sure the timber filler is compatible with the coating system that will be applied. When using Johnstone’s Professional Timber Floor, a quality water based timber filler is suitable.

Step 2: SANDING THE TIMBER FLOOR

Sand your timber floor using a range of machines, such as:

• Drum sander for the level or basic sand, which is designed to remove high points and ridges.
• Disc sander or “edger” for working around skirting boards and into corners.
• Rotary or orbital sander for the finish sand, which smooths off any coarse sanding marks and smooths the floor, ready for coating.

We suggest the following three sanding phases, for the best finish:

• First Sand – 60 grit sand paper. Drum sander using 60 grit sand paper as well as an edging sander to sand corners and edges close to skirting boards.
• Second Sand – 120 grit sand paper
• Third Sand – 240 grit sand paper

Your floor must be vacuumed thoroughly between each sanding phase. This is to remove all dust and dirt. Pay special attention to cracks or other dust traps that might hold particles.

Step 3: COATING APPLICATION

Use a good quality brush that is designed for woodcare application to cut in around edges and corners. A mohair roller provides the best possible finish for Johnstone’s Timber Floor products.

Apply three coats of your chosen Johnstone’s interior flooring product. Ensure your roller is full of product and apply on the timber flooring surface in the direction of the timber grain (board direction). Follow directions on the back of the can for suitable drying/recoat time.
